What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar Fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. It is caused by the inflammation of the plantar fascia- the thick band of tissue that is found along the bottom of your foot that connects the heel bone to your toes. At Marron Wellness Center in Eatontown, NJ, we are the leader in chiropractic care for this condition.

What are the Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar Fasciitis commonly causes stabbing pain that happens most often when a person takes their first few steps in the morning after waking up. The pain usually decreases as you walk around more throughout the day but can reoccur after long periods of sitting or rising again after sitting for quite some time. Plantar fasciitis is very common in people who run, people who are overweight, and people who wear shoes without proper support. The level of pain usually increases after exercise, not during exercising.

What are the Causes of Plantar Fasciitis?

The plantar fascia is like a shock-absorbing band of tissue that supports the arch in your foot. If the tension and stress become too great in this area, small tears can occur in the fascia. If you encounter repetitive stretching and tearing, it can cause the plantar fascia to be inflamed, irritated and cause pain.

What are the Risk Factors of this Condition?

Some of the risk factors for plantar fasciitis are age, types of exercise, foot formation, obesity, and your occupation. The most common ages for this to occur are between the ages of 40 and 60. Any type of exercise that put stress on your heel and under your foot, such as running long distances, ballet, dancing, and jumping activities can aggravate your heels.

If you have flat feet, have an unusually high arch or walk abnormally, it can affect the way your weight is distributed to put stress on your plantar fascia. Obesity adds extra stress at the bottom of your foot and if you work in an occupation where you stand all day, it can most likely aggravate your symptoms.

How is this Condition Diagnosed?

Your doctor will make a diagnosis of your medical history and physical examination results. Your doctor will check for areas of tenderness in your foot and determine where the pain is coming from. The doctor may also order X-rays to make certain there isn't another cause of your foot pain.

What is the Treatment Plan?

Most people recover from plantar fasciitis with over the counter anti-inflammatories and by stretching and strengthening to provide pain relief in a few months. Chiropractic care can provide you with physical therapy and exercises to help your pain level and start the healing process. You may also need a night splint or orthotics in arch support in more difficult situations.

Fortunately, at Marron Wellness Center, we can be of help to you to give you the much-needed pain relief so you can heal. We have treatment plans and exercises to help your plantar fasciitis pain through our chiropractic services. You can give us a call to schedule your appointment at our office in Eatontown, NJ and start the healing process in a timely and pain-free manner.
